Witney Wolves Latest News

Witney Go Down Fighting Against Former Champs

On Tuesday night the Wolves hosted the unbeaten Stealers at the Windrush Leisure Centre in downtown Witney. Heading into the game Witney knew they would be facing their most formidable challenge of the season, with the former league champions fielding several National League players on their roster. The team had spent time working on defensive strategies in preparation for their first big game of the year, and felt confident they could pull off the upset.
Starting for Witney were Matt Jura and Tom Iverson at forward, with Mark Gannon, Kuba Szajer and Gary Solis in the backcourt. The plan was to attack Oxford with size, speed and aggressive defence, and get off to a strong start. Stealers won the opening tip, and were immediately under pressure with Witney deflecting passes and forcing them into a turnover. Solis opened the scoring by knocking down an open three to put the Wolves up, and a clear statement had been made. As the first period proggressed, Oxford were forced to work hard offensively by the Wolves' active defence, which alternated between a 2-2-1 full court press and 3-2 zone, and a strong man to man. The Stealers kept their composure and showed why they're considered the league's strongest team by moving the ball well and getting their bigs open for low post buckets, and breaking out for transition scores. Witney were not to be outclassed, however, as Jura began to find his groove on the low block and Gannon picked Oxford guard Jarvis clean for a breakaway layup. At the end of a good first quarter, Stealers led 28-20.

Wolves Shut Down Thame For First Win

Using stifling pressure defence and sharp ball rotation, Witney overcame a difficult first quarter to clamp down on the Tigers and claim their first win of the season. Starting for Witney were Matt Jura, Tom Iverson, Matt Gannon, Naeem Hussain and Garry Hall. Early on, the Wolves had trouble locating the outside shots, falling behind 15-6 as Thame came out confidently and getting to the foul line. Off the bench came Mark Gannon, Kuba Szajer, Gary Solis and Danny Gould, providing fresh legs, with the first quarter ending with Thame ahead 21-11.

The Wolves deployed their full court press at the beginning of the second period, with immediate results. The Tigers struggled to adjust to the intense pressure, rushing their offence and turning the ball over several times. Guard Mark Gannon began pushing the ball and increasing the tempo, hitting a pull up jumper in the lane and getting the Wolves fast breaking. Point guard Naeem Hussain hit back to back fallaway jumpers as the perimeter game started working, with Thame unable to respond. Witney outscored Thame 22-9 in the second, going into halftime with a 33-30 lead.

Shaky start costs Witney against veterans Brize

In their season opener, the Wolves overcame a slow first half and poor perimeter shooting to push Brize Norton down the stretch, but were held off in the last minute to lose by 4. Witney got off to a promising start with swingman Danny Gould draining a three pointer for their first field goal, and worked the offence well for a number of open looks. Brize Norton took an early 9-3 lead thanks to strong shooting and rebounding, before the Wolves recovered to close the first quarter down 16-13. Despite missing a number of open threes and not creating many open court opportunities, Witney were in the game and feeling good.

Wolves Look For Win In Season Opener

Witney WolvesThe new look Witney Wolves travel to RAF Brize Norton Thursday evening to begin their 2011/12 season. Brize took both games against Witney last year, holding off strong efforts to win each matchup by double figures. With several new additions to the roster added during the offseason, the Wolves are aiming to start strong, and a win over Brize would be a good indication of how far they can go this year.

Friendly against Sonics and Blazers

Firstly big thanks to Hoop's teams for a great afternoon!

Overall we played well; we have lost to Sonics by 6 and won against Blazers by similar points. Noticeable lack of guards on our side as our team consisted only of 7 players and mostly of big guys - forwards. I think if we had a full squad the score line would look different.

It was a good experience and it has shown which parts of our game we need to improve on. The plays worked well but were tricky to run when defended full court and we found it difficult to bit the full court press. On defence 3 – 2 worked well and we managed few steals and fast breaks.

The team: Benny, Dave, Kuba, James, Jason, Jay, Matt

New season and important changes

Hello everybody,

We are getting ready for a new season and there are few changes regarding the team. Most of you know we have now change the name to Witney Wolves – Witney Houstons is no more. With this comes a new kit, new website and new attitude !

The training sessions will remain the same: every Tuesday 20:00 – 22:00 at Wood Green School, Witney. Dave kindly agreed to continue with the position of the team secretary, Matt has taken over the admin side and the sessions are run by Naeem. As previously the single sessions are £5, however we managed to get down the cost of the yearly membership to £160 – the membership includes all training sessions but not the match fees.
